5 Things To Avoid As a Wine Baby (Newbie)
Wine is one of those beverages that when consumed incorrectly the whole experience can be so terrible. Terrible enough to put you off wine FOREVER! When I started drinking wine there were a lot of things I added to try and make it more palatable. I would add Ice to dilute it or even add coca-cola or other things to it LOL! This was good for the time being, but I never really allowed the natural taste of it to gradually grow on me.
If you’re trying to get into wine drinking (become a wine snob), and you’re trying to do it right then these FIVE following steps should help.
These steps will allow you to experience the wine in its true natural form, with all its flavors and characters enhanced.
1.Incorrect Pairings – If you are new to wine and you’re visiting a restaurant that has food paired wine recommendations, do yourself a favor and stick to the recommendation. Wine paired incorrectly will not only put you off the food but it will put you off the wine too.
2.Incorrect Temperature – General rule: Keep your Dry white’s, Rosé and Sparkling chilled (layman’s term =Cold) then serve your full-bodied Red wines at European Room temperature (15 to 18°C). To South Africans this means drink your red wine a little bit chilled, but this is mainly for International wines anyway. With our local wines you can have your red’s at room temperature and your white’s chilled.
3.Going from a non-drinking to full bodied dry wines – No one was born drinking wine. I know I did not enjoy it the first time I tried it. Certain tastes grow on you. So as a beginner I would advise you to try “off -dry” wines”, especially if you’re a fan of sweet wines: My personal favorites are German and South African Riesling, these are a bit OFF the DRY side making them a little sweeter and more easy drinking. I consider Pinotage to also be an easy drinking red wine, the great thing is you can chill it just a little bit to get the best out of it.
4.Putting ICE in wine – This habit might make wine a little easier to drink if you are not used to it, but if you are trying to be a wine a “wine snob” you need to learn how to appreciate the wine in its true form. Otherwise you will never smell the “green apples and the asparagus”. Ice dilutes the character. Some of us prefer our wines like our men, with LOTS of character 😊.
5.Enjoying too much wine at one go – Not everyone can handle your awesomeness in that state :).
