Storing Wines @ Home

We all know that it makes more sense to store everything you consume in the kitchen, but guess what? Kitchens are wine killers!!!A kitchen is the worst place to store wines especially long-term because of the constant fluctuation in temperatures.

That’s why rich people have wine cellars, and I mean what about the rest of us who still want to enjoy and store our wines, but our bank accounts have not yet aligned with our lifestyle? You make do with what you have.

The storing of wines is super important because, any incorrect storage will affect taste and eventually cause the wine to be faulty. By faulty I mean stale, flat (no flavor), taste of sulfur etc.

Here’s a few Do’s and Don’ts to look after your short/long term bottles of happiness:

  • Keep Wines away from strong light sources like direct sunlight or even artificial light.
  • Keep Wines away from places that have constant temperature changes e.g kitchen, bathroom, living room.
  • If your wine has a cork seal, do not refrigerate it for long periods, the cork will harden and lose elasticity, resulting in the wine losing all its characteristics and becoming stale.
  • Wines sealed with cork should be kept lying sideways to keep the cork in contact with the wine, this prevents the cork from shrinking and letting in oxygen into the bottle, thus causing the wine to oxidize .
  • For long-term storage keep the wines at a constant temperature of 10°C and 15°C.
  • Keep wines away from constant vibrations.

And guess what the best place to store your wine is?

Your hallway or wardrobe works as perfect storage, because it does not have a lot of variations in temperature and lighting.

5 Things To Avoid As a Wine Baby (Newbie)

Wine is one of those beverages that when consumed incorrectly the whole experience can be so terrible. Terrible enough to put you off wine FOREVER! When I started drinking wine there were a lot of things I added to try and make it more palatable. I would add Ice to dilute it or even add coca-cola or other things to it LOL! This was good for the time being, but I never really allowed the natural taste of it to gradually grow on me.

If you’re trying to get into wine drinking (become a wine snob), and you’re trying to do it right then these FIVE following steps should help.

These steps will allow you to experience the wine in its true natural form, with all its flavors and characters enhanced.
