Smoothies
There is nothing in this world I hate more than food wastage. I cannot stand seeing old fruits and vegetables being thrown in the bin, because there is always some use for those.
To be honest, yes i hate it but I am guilty for doing it. This is because I do not yet have my mansion with a huge garden space to be able to throw all my fruit and vegetable peels (This might not really be the correct way to do it according to gardeners/farmers, but as long as it causes no harm i’ll keep this way until I learn the proper way).
People always ask “How do you make a smoothie?” and my response is throw everything you have in a blender”. This is really the simplest thing to prepare that requires no skill.
I have three different smoothie types:
- Fruity – Fruits of choice cut up into pieces blended with ice.
- Smooth – Fruits of choice cut up into pieces blended with a little bit of milk and plain yogurt ( fruits contain sugar so I never add sweetened yoguurt).
- Protein – Fruits of Choice blended with your protein shake powder and a little bit of fat free milk.
My whole point of mentioning waste was to explain that your fruits or vegetables might no longer be looking as good as they did when they arrived, maybe the skin looks a little shriveled or dark (e.g papaya, lettuce, pineapple etc). Just aslong as it is not smelling rotten, please do not eat rotten fruits and vegetables then blame it on me. Peel or cut the fruit open and check if it is still okay to use.
My lettuce was getting old so i peeled off the soggy brown layers and it was still green and crisp inside, since it contains a lot of water and has a refreshing taste I decided to add it all to my smoothie. The skin on my Papaya was aslo looking a little wrinkled so I peeled it and the flesh was actually quite firm on the inside.
The rest of the ingredients:
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Low Fat Plain Yogurt
- Kiwi ( added it during the process because my smoothie needed some zest)
- A bit of squeezed lemon juice for some flavor
- Herbalife Cookies & Cream Shake mix
I usually do not measure anything. If it looks too thick add milk or water. If it looks too watery, add a banana, or some protein powder. Sometimes measuring things can take the fun out of creating yummy recipes, so just trust your gut or actually just taste to figure out what is missing.
Lastly you can garnish with anything related to the ingredients you used or add some granola/muesli and chopped fruit for a smoothie bowl.
Preparing a smoothie needs to be fun, quick and simple. Try not to take it too seriously.
